Virgil Abloh is Getting His Own Museum Retrospective

Virgil Abloh may have only founded his luxury label Off White five years ago, but the designer is already getting his own retrospective at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, which will open next June. The museum’s chief curator, Michael Darling, explained in an interview with WWD, “We’re very interested in art participants that are very broad and multidisciplinary. [Abloh] fits that mold that doesn’t fit boundaries and is exploring all these different fields. That’s really an interest to us.” The exhibition will cover Abloh’s early graphic work for Kanye West’s creative agency Donda, his early streetwear designs for Pyrex Vision, his evolution as a designer with Off-White and his collaborations with IKEA among many more. “Virgil has helped us recognize how fashion has become a central hub for contemporary culture,” says Darling. “The fact that he’s from Chicago and lives in Chicago and yet he’s lighting up the international fashion and design scene, we felt we really wanted to celebrate that.” (WWD)

Kotn To Open Their First US Location

The sustainable Canadian basics brand Kotn is expanding to the US, with a store located at 112 Mercer Street in Manhattan’s SoHo district. Kotn was founded by Canadians Mackenzie Yeates, Rami Helali, and Benjamin Sehl in 2015 in order to fill the gap in the marketplace between a $5 Hanes t-shirt and the maniacally soft yet outrageously expensive $100 t-shirts made by James Perse and his ilk. Kotn manufactures their basics out of Egyptian cotton and partners directly with Egyptian cotton farmers to help revive their struggling industry. (Once nicknamed “white gold,” Egyptian cotton production dropped drastically after 2001 due to cuts in government subsidies.) Kotn tees retail for approximately $30. They opened their first store in Toronto’s stylish Queen West neighbourhood in 2017. (Press Release)

Michael Kors is Launching a Sterling Silver Jewelry Collection

Featuring rhinestone-dotted wishbone charms, infinity symbol bracelets, and plenty of rose gold, Michael Kors has announced they will be launching a sterling silver jewelry collection for fall. The line falls into the category of “demi-fine” which uses precious materials but is much more affordable than, say, a $15,000 Cartier brooch. The Michael Kors line will feature sterling silver, plated rose gold and semi precious stones and will range in price from $65 to $735 with many items falling in the $100-$300 range. The highlight of the collection is the Mercer lock, a decorative lock plated in the shape of the letter ‘M.’ “There’s something architectural about the shape of the letter that translates into a strong, glamorous graphic element,” Michael Kors said in a statement.
